Trailer Wednesday: The Other Guys, Resident Evil 4

I can’t come up with any good tie between the two films I’m featuring for Trailer Wednesday other than guns and more guns . We have the next collaboration between Will Ferrell and director/producer Adam McKay, the buddy cop spoof “The Other Guys” and the seemingly unwarranted — but oh wait, now we can play with 3D — fourth installment of the Resident Evil series subtitled “Afterlife” which clearly I can’t find images of.

The Other Guys

Adam McKay and Will Ferrell are back for more with this movie, which I have to say actually looks funny, whereas I was unimpressed with the barrage of immaturity that was “Step Brothers.” I think it’s the on-screen duo of Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg that gives me some hope. If it were Ferrell and John C. Reilly again, you’d have to drag me to watch that film.

The two star as the partners behind the scenes who don’t get any of the glory in buddy cop movies. The movie appears to spoof action movies in the “make fun of Hollywood” sense. The good cop/bad cop routine is exploited in the trailer as well as unrealistic movie explosions. “The Other Guys” comes out on August 6.

Resident Evil: Afterlife

The man behind the fan-driven success of the Resident Evil movies, Paul W.S. Anderson, returns behind the camera for the first time since the very fist movie in 2002, to helm the infection-mutated zombie apocalypse franchise’s first 3D installment. And they’re not shy about letting you know it’s in 3D: the trailer only says in big writing, “THIS IS THE TECHNOLOGY JAMES CAMERON USED FOR AVATAR!!!”

So sure, the 3D will be better than retro-fitted 3D junk piles such as “Clash of the Titans” and might even be impressive. But this is the fourth film in this series. By the movie’s September 10 release date, 3D will not be enough to bring in people who weren’t already fans of the previous three films. The trailer indicates as much and it appears the focus is on stylish action shots that will look good in 3D. At least if you’re going to bother to see it, pony up the extra cash, because this looks like a total 2D waste of time.
