Trailer Wednesday: Shrek Forever After

SFA_RGB_070109_1247187521_640wInsert loud sigh here. Finally — finally — we get the trailer for the last — the last — installment of Dreamworks’ money-making ogre, Shrek. Well-titled Shrek Forever After (without inserting a “u” in “forever” amazingly enough), Dreamworks has said this is Shrek’s last hurrah. They’ll need to scramble to find his successor, but for now, more money to be made on numero cuatro.

I actually enjoy the franchise. At this point I’m indifferent, but children’s stories with explicit adult undertones are fun for me. If I were a parent, I’d be a bit bothered, but I get to enjoy it in all its thong underwear and catnip/heroine joke glory.

In the final chapter, Shrek makes a deal with Rumpelstiltskin (voiced curiously well by the unknown Walt Dohrn) to have a day of normal ogre life, only he neglects to read the fine print and finds himself in an upside-down version of Far, Far Away where Donkey doesn’t know him, Fiona is a warrior princess, Puss in Boots is a fat kitty and Rumpelstiltskin is king. I suppose when you’re on No. 4, the best thing to do is pick up the world and characters and shake them vigorously so that you can at least do something different.

On observation, I would say same-old Shrek jokes and such, but a throw-away story, which is what tends to happen beyond the first sequel anyway.
