Trailer Wednesday: Latest Airbender and Eclipse

trailermash

I expected an onslaught of summer movie trailers in these weeks, but instead we just got new ones from movies we’ve already trailers of before. I previously linked to the first teaser for “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse,” but the folks at Summit really stepped it up a notch with this new trailer. They’ve actually convinced me this is an action movie when I know if I were to see it (I’ve only watched DVDs at this point) I would be just as disappointed. The action is also jacked up in the new “The Last Airbender” trailer, the movie based on the Nickelodeon cartoon “Avatar: The Last Airbender.” Just think of all the money they’d make from stupid people if they didn’t drop the “Avatar” part. Both movies will compete with each other Fourth of July weekend though “Eclipse” hits Wednesday the 30th and “Airbender” Friday the 2nd.

The Last Airbender

The early teaser way back from last year and the more recent teaser back during the Super Bowl didn’t tell us much. We know this is another “child with a destiny” story who is meant to make peace among the nations who represent different elements, namely fire and water — and of course he controls air which I guess allows him to control the other elements.

Finally, we see the elements in action. This could really help M. Night Shyamalan’s dying career, in fact I’m shocked they even attached his name to the title, but action is new territory for him, so at least this should be different. The effects look pretty good here and I would imagine that if the retro-fitting is done well, the 3D could end up all right, yet I would still be skeptical of it. Also, yes, that’s Dev Patel from “Slumdog Millionaire” as part of the evil Fire nation.

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse

I alluded to it before, but this is a much more exciting trailer than anything ever released for a Twilight movie before thanks to the epic battle score and use of every action clip probably in the film. It might convince the teenage boys to indulge the girls they follow around at the mall and go see this movie. Add in the summer release which guarantees those kids are free to go and “Eclipse” could make way more than “New Moon,” which is saying something.

Maybe third director David Slade, who knows a bit about vampires from his last project, “30 Days of Night,” has actually breathed some semblance of quality into the film. But then again, Melissa Rosenberg is still adapting, who should just be sticking to Showtime’s “Dexter” because she’s so much better at that (I just started Season 1).
