Oscars 2010 Nominees – Avatar and “Locker” tie with 9

Oscars2010And they’re up! I’ve got your list of Oscar nominees this morning along with how my predictions checked out. The big news is that the Academy absolutely loves The Hurt Locker, giving it as many nominations as Avatar. They share noms in seven of those categories, so this should really be quite a race to the announcement of Best Picture. Right behind them was Inglourious Basterds with eight nominations. Precious and Up in the Air each earned six. Up scored five. Click on the Best Picture nominees in red for my reviews.

Best Motion Picture of the Year

Movie Muse Prediction: 9/10 Correct. The Blind Side came up and surprised everyone, taking a spot from Invictus on my list, but guess what? Both are Warner Bros films, and I said WB would get representation, didn’t I?

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role

  • Mo’nique for Precious: Based on the Novel “Push” by Sapphire
  • Anna Kendrick for Up in the Air
  • Vera Farmiga for Up in the Air
  • Penelope Cruz for Nine
  • Maggie Gyllenhaal for Crazy Heart

Movie Muse Prediction: 4/5 Correct. I took a chance with Diane Kruger in that last spot, which went to Maggie Gyllenhaal. Not a big shock

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role

  • Christoph Waltz for Inglourious Basterds
  • Woody Harrelson for The Messenger
  • Stanley Tucci for The Lovely Bones
  • Christopher Plummer for The Last Station
  • Matt Damon for Invictus

Movie Muse Prediction: 5/5 Correct. The only thing I wasn’t sure of was the film Tucci would be nominated for, which was The Lovely Bones rather than Julie & Julia

Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role

  • Sandra Bullock for The Blind Side
  • Meryl Streep for Julie & Julia
  • Carey Mulligan for An Education
  • Gabourey Sidibe for Precious: Based on the Novel “Push” by Sapphire
  • Helen Mirren for The Last Station

Movie Muse Prediction: 5/5 Correct. There were no surprises here.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role

  • Jeff Bridges for Crazy Heart
  • Colin Firth for A Single Man
  • George Clooney for Up in the Air
  • Morgan Freeman for Invictus
  • Jeremy Renner for The Hurt Locker

Movie Muse Prediction: 5/5 Correct. Boom money. Jeremy Renner was my pick for the final spot and low and behold. The Academy really loves “Locker.”

Best Achievement in Directing

  • James Cameron for Avatar
  • Jason Reitman for Up in the Air
  • Kathryn Bigelow for The Hurt Locker
  • Quentin Tarantino for Inglourious Basterds
  • Lee Daniels for Precious: Based on the Novel “Push” by Sapphire

Movie Muse Prediction: 5/5 Correct. What did I say? Don’t mess with the LA Times directors round table.

Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen

  • Quentin Tarantino for Inglourious Basterds
  • Mark Boal for The Hurt Locker
  • Joel and Ethan Coen for A Serious Man
  • Alessandro Camon, Oren Moverman for The Messenger
  • Bob Peterson, Pete Docter for Up

Movie Muse Prediction: 4/5 Correct. I took a chance on Avatar for that last spot, but The Messenger was the dark horse.

Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published

  • Jason Reitman and Sheldon Turner for Up in the Air
  • Neil Blomkamp and Terri Tatchell for District 9
  • Nick Hornby for An Education
  • Geoffrey Fletcher for Precious: Based on the Novel “Push” by Sapphire
  • Jesse Armstrong, Simon Blackwell, Armondo Iannucci, Ian Martin, Tony Roche for In the Loop

Movie Muse Prediction: 4/5 Correct.  Julie & Julia writer Nora Ephron was my dark horse for the last spot here but I heard “Loop” was just excellent. Can’t wait for it in my Netflix queue.

  • Inglourious Basterds (Robert Richardson)
  • Avatar (Mauro Fiore)
  • Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Bruno Delbonnel)

  • Michael Giacchino for Up
  • James Horner for Avatar
  • Hans Zimmer for Sherlock Holmes
  • Alexandre Desplat for Fantastic Mr. Fox
  • Marco Beltrami and Buck Sanders for The Hurt Locker

Movie Muse Prediction: 3/5 Correct. Look at all this Locker-love. That wasn’t even on my radar. Not surprised Alexandre Desplat got that other spot I missed, he was a big name floating around there too.

Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures, Original Song

  • “The Weary Kind” by T-Bone Burnett, Ryan Bingham from Crazy Heart
  • “Down in New Orleans” by Randy Newman from The Princess and the Frog
  • “Almost There” by Randy Newman from The Princess and the Frog
  • “Loin de Paname” by Reinhardt Wagner and Frank Thomas from Paris 36
  • “Take it All” by Maury Yeston from Nine

Movie Muse Prediction: 2/5 Correct. Not to self: The Golden Globes are not the barometer by which to predict this category. I don’t even know what the movie Paris 36 is. I’m not surprised at all the Randy Newman love, however, as he earned two noms as opposed to my predicted one. Also, I guessed the wrong Nine song.

  • China’s Unnatural Disaster: The Tears of Sichuan Province
  • The Last Campaign of Governor Booth Gardner
  • The Last Truck: Closing of a GM Plant

  • The White Ribbon (Germany)
  • A Prophet (France)
  • The Secret in their Eyes (Argentina)
  • Ajami (Israel)
  • The Milk of Sorrow (Peru)

Movie Muse Prediction: 4/5 Correct. I did some pretty good guessing here as only those first two were locks. I only missed “Milk of Sorrow.”

Best Animated Feature Film of the Year

  • Up
  • The Fantastic Mr. Fox
  • The Princess and the Frog
  • Coraline
  • The Secret of Kells

Movie Muse Prediction: 4/5 Correct. Secret of who now? Oh well, at least it didn’t rob anyone overly deserving of a nomination.

Overall Movie Muse Predictions: 59/70

Wow. I’m gonna take that one. Did not expect to do that well. Keep checking back here all this coming month for Oscar coverage!
