“Megamind” takes over the box office

As expected, the box office did big business to open November with the three new wide releases earning a combined total just shy of $100 million, with the animated supervillain flick “Megamind” leading the charge with $46 M.

Robert Downey Jr./Zach Galifianakis comedy “Due Date” came in second with a strong $32.6 million for an R-rated comedy, proving projects related to “The Hangover” will do quite well for themselves for some time. If there was any doubt as to whether Downey Jr. could draw to non-blockbuster properties, this settled it and Galifianakis has also proven himself viable once again.

  1. Megamind – $46 M (weekend) … $46 (gross)
  2. Due Date – $32.6 M … $32.6 M
  3. For Colored Girls – $19.4 M … $19.4 M
  4. RED – $8.6 M … $71.6 M
  5. Saw 3D – $7.7 M … $38.3

Tyler Perry’s women-focused star-studded drama “For Colored Girls” did typical business for the director with $19.4 million. In fourth was “RED,” leapfrogging yet another film this week in “Saw 3D.” Last week’s horror series finale dropped 65 percent whereas “RED” fell from $10.7 M last weekend to just $8.6 this weekend.

Overall, the box office was up 68.2 percent from last weekend, which puts it in fourth place for biggest spikes in 2010 behind the weekends that “Valentine’s Day,” “Alice in Wonderland” and “Iron Man 2” premiered.
