Trailer Wednesday: The Social Network, The Town

Two highly intriguing fall films made this week’s Trailer Wednesday. If you can’t tell, I’m really high on David Fincher’s “The Social Network,” aka The Facebook Movie. Last week brought us the first full-length trailer for the film. Alongside it we have “The Town” Ben Affleck’s sophomore feature after “Gone Baby Gone” a few years back.

The Social Network

David Fincher is one of the most respected directors around. From “Se7en” to “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” he draws a lot of praise for his work, regardless the genre. That’s why I’m high on his adaptation of the book “The Accidental Billionaires,” which tells of the story of Facebook’s creation and some of the betrayal involved behind the social networking site’s incredible ride to popularity in just a matter of a half a decade.

Jesse Eisenberg takes his Michael Cera comparisons and throws them into the fire as Facebook co-founder (and fellow fraternity brother of mine — same fraternity, I obvious didn’t go to Harvard) Mark Zuckerberg. Future Spider-Man Andrew Garfield plays his one-time best friend and many others including Justin Timberlake show up. The trailer is beautifully done with a choir singing Radiohead’s “Creep” throughout. Hopefully the film is just as good.

The Town

It’s a bit funny that Ben Affleck gets dissed in his own movie trailer. Despite also being the star of the film “The Town” in addition to its director, the trailer includes “from the director of ‘Gone Baby Gone,'” not “directed by Ben Affleck.” Would making it public that Affleck directed the movie really turn off people from going to see it? That’s sad. If they knew how great a job Affleck did on “Gone Baby Gone,” they’d think differently. Rarely do you get a debut like that film, so I’m interested in how “The Town” turns out.

“The Town” keeps things in Boston for Affleck, this time focusing on bank robberies in Charlestown. I’ll try not to reveal plot details because the trailer does a great job of turning the premise into a plot twist in the trailer itself. The cast is terrific with Blake Lively, Rebecca Hall, Jeremy Renner, Jon Hamm and Chris Cooper. Keep an eye on this one. Plenty of action, plenty of drama, plenty of talent.
