“Megamind” control continues
As expected, DreamWorks animated film “Megamind” stayed pat at No.1 this past weekend with nearly $30 million. All three new wide releases, however, landed in the top five, the most notable of which was the critically acclaimed Denzel Washington movie “Unstoppable,” which took the actor’s usual $20-million pull and landed in second.
- Megamind – $29.1 M (weekend) … $88.8 (gross)
- Unstoppable – $22.6 M … $22.6 M
- Due Date – $15.4 M … $88.8 M
- Skyline – $11.6 M … $11.6 M
- Morning Glory – $9.2 M … $11.8 M
- For Colored Girls – $6.5 M … $30.6 M
- RED – $4.9 M … $79.6 M
- Paranormal Activity 2 – $2.9 M … $81.9 M
- Saw 3D – $2.8 M … $43.5
- Jackass 3D – $2.2 M … $114.6 M
Alien-invasion film “Skyline” seemed to flop with $11.6 million, but the film was only made for about the same amount. When all is said and done, the low-budget venture will have been worthwhile for Universal, but not overwhelmingly so. “Morning Glory,” however, made less than $10 M ($11.8 over its first five days), a disappointment considering the estimated $40 million that it took to rope in names such as Harrison Ford and Diane Keaton.
Robert Downey Jr./Zach Galifiniakis did not play quite as well in its second week with audiences. The film dropped more than 50 percent from last week, not a disappointment, but not an indicator of a film receiving great word of mouth.
Outside the top 10 for the first time this week was “The Social Network,” which has made about $87 million in its first seven weeks, a definite success for a drama.
All will be shaken up next week with the release of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt. 1.”
