Best of 2010: The Year in Review

I’ve already shared with you the top genre films and my top 10 films of 2010, so now it’s time to take a close look at the year 2010 as it was for movies. Most movie-lovers, myself included, look back in disappointment at this year. The first-half slate of new movies was excruciatingly weak and […]

The Top 10 Films of 2010

It’s that time of year again where everyone wants to know what the best and worst of the year were, so naturally, to keep up with the demand, I am forced to whittle down the year’s movies into the ten best in my eyes. I’ll be honest — I like the retrospective take, but this […]

Review: The Fighter

When it comes to winning awards, boxing films seem to always be contenders; as such, the thought of watching “another boxing film” can be off-putting. But “The Fighter” hangs in and fends off those labels, earning every bit of its critical praise. That’s because most of the fighting in this film takes place out of […]

Box office gets “Focked,” but shows more “Grit”

As expected, the “Little Fockers” took over the box office on Christmas weekend, but it was “True Grit” that made an impressive box-office showing with $25 million, more than any Western ever, and the five-day total from Wednesday made it the Coen brothers’ most successful film opening.

Archive Review: Following (1998)

There’s no way to watch “Following” and not conclude that Christopher Nolan would become something special. Someone who can weave that much complexity into a film with a cast of few and in the course of just 69 minutes clearly has a knack for the filmmaking thing. “Following” might not amount to a whole lot […]

Review: Little Fockers

Quality comedies — if they go beyond one sequel — never come in threes. In the case of “Little Fockers,” three’s a Focking mess. But we asked for it; “Meet the Fockers” ranks as the highest-grossing live-action comedy in the U.S., so regardless of quality, we were going to get whatever studios served us. And […]

What happened to (good) Christmas movies?

They don’t make them like they used to — as archaic as that expression makes me sound. Heck, they don’t even make them at all, practically. Last year, I featured my five favorite Christmas movies, but none of them, naturally, come after 1996. I’m not really complaining about this. Almost every “Christmas movie” that has […]

On DVD: The Sorcerer’s Apprentice

Nicolas Cage and director Jon Turteltaub found a certain magic with the “National Treasure” movies, so it’s not surprising that Disney turned to them again in hopes of turning another existing property in the form of the infamous “Fantasia” scene into a possible franchise starter. A story of ancient sorcery and modern action in present-day […]

Christmas Movie Preview (12.22.10)

Christmas is on Saturday, but studios prefer the Wednesday before to capitalize on the holidays as many people are off work. As such, we have an early edition of Weekend Movie Preview. Unfortunately, not all that exciting this year. “Little Fockers,” the third movie in a line of highly successful family comedies, gets the biggest […]

Making Family Films Focking Funny

Who ever thought a film about a nurse named Gaylord Focker meeting his future in-laws, one of whom is ex-CIA, would ever pave the way for a comedy trilogy? The simple idea to capitalize on the tension of the in-law relationship made “Meet the Parents” a hit with audiences back in 2000 and consequently its […]

“Tron” helps light up the box office

Although $44 million is far from ideal opening numbers when you have this much at stake, Disney execs can rest easier knowing that “Tron: Legacy” wasn’t a flop. The sci-fi adventure was the uncontested first-place finisher this weekend, beating out second-place finisher “Yogi Bear” by nearly $30 million.

Review: Tron Legacy

All the pieces have been put in place for 1982 cult classic “Tron” to reinvent itself as a moder-day sci-fi epic. Between Disney sinking hundreds of millions into “Tron: Legacy,” marketing it like the must-see event of the year and then securing a PG rating to make sure anyone and everyone could see it, the […]

Weekend Movie Preview (12.17.10)

And boom goes the holiday season dynamite. Oscar Watch: Acting categories take shape with SAG noms

The Screen Actors Guild Award nominations have been announced, which means between this and the Golden Globes nominations, we have a pretty darn good idea of who the competition will be for the Oscars’ five Best Actor, Actress and Supporting Actor and Actress nominations — and the ultimate winner. “The Fighter” and “The King’s Speech” […]
