After this weekend, Walt Disney can breathe a sigh of relief and say “I told you so.” The company dropped the “Chronicles of Narnia” films after “Prince Caspian,” the second film, didn’t come nearly as close to the first, “The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe.” Picked up by 20th Century Fox and made with [...]

On the slowest movie weekend of the year, “Tangled” jumped over “Harry Potter” to be first at the box office with about $21 million. Business was cut in half from last week thanks to no notable new releases.
In a surprisingly close box-office race this weekend, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt. 1,” in its second week, fended off Disney’s latest animated hit, “Tangled.” Although the five-day Thanksgiving totals were not as close (“Harry” won by a good $6 million), the three-day total put “Harry” ahead by fewer than $400,000.
Landing at No. 6 on the all-time opening weekends list, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt. 1″ earned the biggest first-weekend take for a “Potter” film yet. Clearly, fans of all degrees were interested in checking out the beginning of the final chapter of the beloved film franchise. That’s the power of the ending [...]
As expected, DreamWorks animated film “Megamind” stayed pat at No.1 this past weekend with nearly $30 million. All three new wide releases, however, landed in the top five, the most notable of which was the critically acclaimed Denzel Washington movie “Unstoppable,” which took the actor’s usual $20-million pull and landed in second.
As expected, the box office did big business to open November with the three new wide releases earning a combined total just shy of $100 million, with the animated supervillain flick “Megamind” leading the charge with $46 M.
The “Saw” franchise is back atop the box office for the first time since 2007 aka “Saw IV.” In 2008, “High School Musical 3″ didn’t so much as give “Saw V” a chance and last year, “Paranormal Activity” bum-rushed the box office and held “Saw VI’s” opening weekend to below $15 million. This weekend, the [...]
The phenomenon continues. “Paranormal Activity 2″ earned more than $40 million in box office receipts this weekend, earning it the distinction of the biggest weekend for a “supernatural” horror film (beating out “The Grudge”) and sending it on a path that will likely equal the $107-million domestic gross of the original.
Either we’re all jackasses and the joke’s on us, or Americans really need to see people do stupid $#%( to themselves these days given all the economic turmoil. The third time was the charm (not that the first two performed poorly by any means) as “Jackass 3D” sucked up a half million, setting a fall [...]
A slow October weekend at the box office spurred on by unanticipated releases and good weather let “The Social Network” stay on top for a second consecutive week with just $15.4 million. The film edged Katherine Heigl/Josh Duhamel film “Life as We Know It” by less than one million.
Facebook might be worth $25 billion, but Sony/Columbia will gladly take the $22.4 million hall for their critically acclaimed drama. The film was the only newcomer this week to place in the top five and did so handily. The surprise was that “Let Me In,” the hyped American remake of the acclaimed Swedish film, finished [...]
Money never sleeps, but owls do, only it’s during the day. What I mean by that is, Zack Snyder’s animated film “Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole” finished modestly (to be nice) and the sequel to “Wall Street” took first at the box office this weekend.
Four films went at it this weekend and much to the box office’s benefit. Business was up about 32 percent as the Ben Affleck-directed “The Town” took top honors as one of those rare super-successful crime dramas. Of the other new entries, “Easy A” gave Emma Stone some serious pull in future film contract negotiations [...]
I’m not sure if the same goes for human existence, but in Hollywood, you can usually bet on the “afterlife.” The fourth film in the Resident Evil series earned just what it expected, proving that some fan bases never die. At the same time, 3D did not boost ticket sales significantly: “Afterlife” made only $3 [...]
Put on that big American grin, George Clooney, because your little thriller has defied expectations. Even with a Wednesday opening, enough people were intrigued by Anton Corbijn’s “The American” to give it top honors this first fall weekend, which didn’t take much, seeing as $13.1 million was all it took. Still, an impressive feat for [...]
