Weekend Preview (10.15.10)

Finally we have some interesting October offerings. The “Jackass” franchise returns with a third and three-dimensional installment and a bunch of our favorite actors above the age of 55 team up for an action comedy. If you’re not a horror fan, this is about it as far as what’s to see in October.

“Spider-Man” reboot baddie to be The Lizard

It’s not official news, but it didn’t take long for someone in the movie blogosphere to get inside information on the true identity of the villain that Rhys Ifans will play in the “Spider-Man” reboot from director Marc Webb. According to TheWrap, that villain — which Sony announced just days ago as undisclosed — will […]

“Hangover 2” set pics: They’re off to Thailand

I don’t normally show unexciting first-look images from movie sets, but the sequel to the most successful R-rated comedy in motion-picture history deserves some of my attention — the photos from Popsugar are just a springboard.

Rhys Ifans will play undisclosed “Spider-Man” villain

With production beginning in December, casting is in full force for Marc Webb’s “Spider-Man” reboot. Last week, we received news of Emma Stone’s casting as love interest Gwen Stacy opposite Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker. Today, Sony/Columbia Pictures has revealed UK actor Rhys Ifans will be “the villain” in the 2012 film.

“The Social Network” adds a few million more friends

A slow October weekend at the box office spurred on by unanticipated releases and good weather let “The Social Network” stay on top for a second consecutive week with just $15.4 million. The film edged Katherine Heigl/Josh Duhamel film “Life as We Know It” by less than one million.

On DVD: Date Night

Everything that can be said about an actual date night (namely predictable) can be said about “Date Night.” No denying that stars Steve Carell and Tina Fey possess the most universal and multi-generational comic chops of any two comedians working today, but they certainly have to work to chew “Date Night” into something palatable.

Weekend Preview (10.8.10)

We’re getting into a more premature than usual October lull. You can tell when you have so many random films thrown into one weekend, none of which seem like real winners (unless you count Secretariat in the literal sense). We have our first female-charged sports underdog film since “The Blind Side” took the box office […]

Has Katherine Heigl killed her image?

After making the jump from “Grey’s Anatomy” to a starring role in Judd Apatow’s “Knocked Up,” Katherine Heigl was considered the next big leading lady. She was perfect in that hit comedy, partly for her performance, but largely in bringing in a female audience to an otherwise dude-centric comedy. Even I became a fan of […]

Trailer Wednesday: Paranormal Activity 2, I Am Number Four

After tackling a couple Oscar hopefuls last week on Trailer Wednesday, I couldn’t justify posting the second (longer and even better) “True Grit” trailer, so on to more mainstream stuff. We finally have a full trailer for “Paranormal Activity 2” for those who were sucked in by last year’s surprise hit and want more. Second, […]

Emma Stone is Gwen Stacy, not Mary Jane

Despite an earlier report from Deadline that said Sony had offered burgeoning actress Emma Stone the role of Mary Jane Watson, it turns out, according to a press release, that “Easy A” star will be playing the role of Peter Parker’s actual first love, Gwen Stacy.

Well, it took longer than necessary, but MGM and New Line appear to have arrived at the inevitable conclusion that Peter Jackson needs to direct “The Hobbit” if this film is ever going to happen.

Zack Snyder will get Superman back in flight

Comic geek and master of stylistic action Zack Snyder has been named by producers Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas as the next director of the Superman franchise. Snyder (“300,” “Watchmen”) will begin work on the film as soon as he wraps post-production on “Sucker Punch,” which comes out in March.

“Social Network” pokes the box office

Facebook might be worth $25 billion, but Sony/Columbia will gladly take the $22.4 million hall for their critically acclaimed drama. The film was the only newcomer this week to place in the top five and did so handily. The surprise was that “Let Me In,” the hyped American remake of the acclaimed Swedish film, finished […]

Archive Review: The Great Escape (1963)

As far as war films go, “The Great Escape” doesn’t rank in the most dramatic or the most eye-opening. It doesn’t even make the list of World War II epics with the most compelling characters. It’s a movie with that intangible “it” factor that only comes from an impressive story. Films such as this one […]
